How to fix external hard drive that can't be detected

Specs: Window7beginner, 8gb
I was watching movie with my hard disk connected on my laptop so when I gave it a friend he said that his laptop can detectect the hard disk so I did every thing I could but it didn't work help me out

It may just need a drive letter manually adding to it. Windows sometimes fails to assign a drive letter to an external drive, and with without a drive letter it cannot be shown in the Windows shell.
