how to copy folders to a portable hard drive

Specs: Windows Vista
My computer has crashed form a bad virus, after much help and a lot of work i can only get into command prompt. I've been told the registry is ruined and i have to reload vista wiping everything. How do i get all my files from my c: and d: onto my portable harddrive using command prompt? I have thousands of files, is there anyway to copy or move these at once? Or at least folder by folder?

Looks like you have XCOPY and ROBOCOPY natively available. I think robocopy is the preferred method for vista:

I believe the syntax is the same:

robocopy_c:\*.*_g:\_/e and enter, where G: is the drive letter of the external drive. So whatever the drive letter of yours is, substitute it for G. And each underline( _ ) is a space so wherever you see the underline, hit the space bar instead.

However, that depends on if the basic OS that's loaded even recognizes the external drive. If not, robocopy and xcopy are useless. In that case you need to boot from one of those Ultimate Boot CD's that are available for download from various web sites.

Real men don't use AntiVirus; they just reformat

"I've been told the registry is ruined and i have to reload vista"

Exactly who told you that?

a computer tech from just was working online with me for 6 days and form not even being able to boot the pc we got it to log on to the desktop, but that's it. couldn't click on anything or it froze and couldn't load any malware or spyware removal programs, i couldn't even get it to read my external hard drive. If i use the recovery disc or go in safe mode with command prompt i can access my external HD. Thanks for your reply, but i ended up figuring out how to do it with XCOPY and i have saved all that i needed to. anything else on there i don't care if i lose it.
