I have a Compaq Presario desktop with Windows 7, a Brother HL-2170w laser printer, and a Dell 948 AIO inkjet printer. Both printers are connected via individual USB cables (not on a hub) to the computer, with the laser selected as default. The laser printer works just fine. The inkjet printer will not print, no matter what. It will scan documents when instructed to by the computer, but it will not print. Each time we try to print in color, it goes through the initial motions, but a window pops up stating that there is no communication between the printer and the computer. I have done everything I can think of: selecting the inkjet as the default, turning on only the inkjet, completely disconnecting the laser printer and rebooting the computer -- each time, I get the message that there is no communication between the computer and the inkjet printer. Is there a way I can get BOTH printers to work from the one computer without having to purchase a new item?

You do not need to buy anything else.

"Both printers are connected via individual USB cables (not on a hub) to the computer,"

This is the clue. They are independent of the other. Forget about the working one and trouble shoot the non-working on. Set it as default first in control panel then try test print from printer page.

Did it ever work? Is it new or old? Do you have the factory drivers and applications for it in Window 7?
