If no built in modem then you need a serial modem. That uses the 9 pin or could even be possible to use the printer but that is advanced stuff.

I want to be able to connect the Thinkpad 386 to an Internet service provider. That means that I need to use an internal or external modem. The Device Manager indicates that there is a PCMICA card, but I don't know if it is an internal modem.

By the way, can you or anyone else tell me where I can find a copy of the 386's user manual? Thanks very much for your help.

The Device Manager only shows a PCMICA under Modems, no specific hardware
name. Can you tell me if this is an internal modem? Thanks very much for your help.

There are PCMCIA modems. Apparently you don't have the adapter cord for it. Also you need drivers. You can remove the PCMCIA card and see what you have,
