Is it true that an External HD suitable for a LAPTOP comes with 2.5" form format and not 3.5" as for a Desktop? What is the difference in functionality of a 7200 RPM and 5400 RPM external?

Either should work, 2.5 is more compact therefore more popular as a complete item.

7200 will handle data more quickly than 5400.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

You can use either a 2.5" or a 3.4" external drive in either a desktop or a laptop. With external use the size makes no difference. it is the interface it is connected to that matters and that is usually USB which is the same on both desktops and laptops..

There is no difference in functionality between a 7200 rpm and 5400 rmp disk except that the drive spindle on a 7200 rmp disk spins faster and therefore is likely to be able to transfer data faster.

The main difference is that 3.5 in. drives require an external power supply and most 2.5 in. drives can draw their power from the USB port(s).
