All I will advise is don't buy a Seagate drive. I've had three new Seagate's fail on me last year. So I replaced them with Western Digital drives and so far they've given me no trouble.

Also, try not to buy one that is a sealed unit, that has to be cracked apart to get at the hard drive. If in the event the external does have issues after the warranty period, at least you can access and replace a defective drive if that's the issue. Read how long and how well the warranty is.

Is it true that an External HD suitable for a Notebook comes with 2.5" form format and not 3.5" like for a Desktop? What is the difference in functionality of a 7200 RPM and 5400 RPM external?
