How did you determine the drive had (possibly still has) a stuck head?

Presumably by “literally opened the drive” you mean you accessed the drive within the case which houses the actual drive; not that you opened the actual hard drive itself?

If the latter, you’re a braver chap than I Ganga Din. Mechanical drives have very tight tolerances with regard to the head assembly; especially the gap, spacing, between the head(s) and platters. Equally the alignment of the heads on, for want a better term, the actual arm which holds the head(s) is critical. Disassembly of mechanical hard drives isn’t usually wise; as without proper tools, and a very steady hand..., the chances of getting it back together and working again, are pretty slim.

If you actually mean you opened the external portable housing... then perhaps remove the drive from within; connect it to a computer using the appropriate USB adapter cable and see if it shows up? It may well be, and quite common with many portable drive units, that the onboard electronics, the interface between the installed hard drive and the usb connector, is faulty. Equally, the usb connector on many housings is reportedly very poorly mounted, and that is often the point of failure. Using a usb cable adapter will eliminate that from the equation.

Such cables are available from the “big rain forest website”, Egghead, ebuyer, and Best Buy - to mention a few.

"literally oppened the HarDrive"

If you're saying you split the HDD case & exposed the platters to the "outside world", you've contaminated it. You're done.

@ riider - tack for a useful advisory site re' what and why on breaking open a hard drive. Usephool to have for future reference to others.

I think a lot of pholks see movies where the forensics types open a hard drive and access the platters for data... And it looks "so easy" and safe to do...
