On a CRT monitor use whatever resolution your graphics card can provide as long as you are happy with the display. If you were using an LCD monitor then those have a native resolution that is best not to vary from. Goin' Fishin' (Some day)
According to Dell, the max resolution is "1600 dots x 1200 lines non-interlaced maximum addressable resolution format at 65Hz". If that's not to your liking, try another 4:3 resolution. OR you can use 1600 x 1200 & increase your DPI setting & text settings.
