Specs: N/A
The manufacturer's label is so worn to be unreadable, where else might I find the number so that I can do a bios upgrade, thanks?

Try downloading SIW and using it. Get the free version at the link below.

Why do you want to update the BIOS?

That was my thought too.
You don't need to download anything, go to Start, run and type in
dxdiag
Say no to the next screen, and it will show you all the info on your system.

"...why the need for the bios upgrade??"

Agreed, you need a compelling reason for any BIOS upgrade. A failed update/upgrade can leave you with a non-working machine.

Thank you for that-
Why update? Well it is a redundant laptop where the HD has been wiped and I thought I would have a dabble with Linux. When I try to load Ubuntu I get a screen full of geek- speak which (I think) is telling me the bios is out of date, 1999.

The CMOS battery is probably dead.

<<The CMOS battery is probably dead. >>

That's an interesting thought - how else would I know this, what other symptoms would I see?

"When I try to load Ubuntu I get a screen full of geek- speak which (I think) is telling me the bios is out of date, 1999."

Any version of Linux will display the boot process, so ignore it. Unless KDE/Gnome refuse to initialize, leave things as they are. If you're new to Linux, I'd strongly recommend trying live distros before comitting to one:

The 1999 date is the give away. The BIOS has reverted back to the date of its creation.
