You would need to purchase an ethernet expansion card that goes in the PCI slot on your motherboard inside the computer. They are usually very inexpensive on eBay (<$10). You may find them in your local Best Buy but it would likely cost quite a bit more (<$20-$30).

Hi BeeBee, here in the UK:-

a) the router/modem is best connected to the master telephone socket

b) connecting the pc directly (by ethernet cable) to the router is better than wifi.

Sdfox's advice is good, however if the pc location is remote from the router, consider using wifi:-

i) a usb wifi dongle - cost about £6.
ii) if pc has no usb or usb 1, a usb 2 card - cost about £6

With a Pentium 3, due to cpu speed. you may find problems with programs such as Skype. e.g. the video side may not work but sound will be ok.

Please advise back on progress.

As a matter of interest, where are you located? I am in Hammersmith, West London.

Good Luck - Keep us posted.

You can find many new under $10. and many more between $10.-$20., many with free shipping option in US/Canada at:

and you do not need to bother with ebay.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Hi XpUser, surely that dongle is only good if he already has a usb port?

Hi Fingers, I disagree ebay should be discounted. When purchasing one needs to *fully* research for the best deal at the time.

e.g. here in the UK sometimes Amazon, ebay, direct or elsewhere have the best offer. Gradually more here are realising online sales can offer considerable savings.

ebay is used by many small traders as their sales outlet. The www is truly ww.

Sadly the general public are being brainwashed into looking at just the bottom line, and ignoring quality and/or service etc., which can be to their detriment.

As the UK post office have recently increased their charges to rip-off levels, offline purchase should be considered.

Good Luck - Keep us posted.

Mike: I do not discount ebay but when you can find a quality online retailer like newegg, the product is $6. with free shipping, the return policy is clear and liberal, there is no reason to have to look to ebay where you then need to look to each find for shipping, reputation, return policy, and other factors. When there is a reasonable chance of saving significantly, it is worth the 'bother', but in this case, it is not.

The USB/ethernet dongle is definitely an option, especially for those who do not want to open their case, and for old laptops that have their ethernet or wireless die on them.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
