how do i transfer files from old hard drive

Specs: Windows 7
i have removed my old hard drive from my computer with a smashed screen, I am now trying to transfer the files onto my new laptop via a usb cable but when i try to open the old hard drive it says 'access denied' ,how can i view the files if they are protected? Can anyone please help i dont really have a clue what im doing!!!

... hook-up a monitor to the smashed still usable(?) no screener burn the files to dvd!

(you may have to select vga mode in bios or from tapping <F8> <key> @ bootup)

You need to take ownership of the files.

...or you can use a free data recovery program such as recuva or pc inspector and you won't need to take ownership of all the individual folders with permissions.
