How do I stream tv over my network

I don't want a slingbox. I'm building a media center pc and I know that I'll need some sort of tv tuner device ( Then I imagine I would hook the output of my cable box into the input of the tuner. I would need a cable splitter of some kind so that I can still get the cable to go to the television.

Two questions:
1) Once I have the signal coming into the media center pc, how do I set it up to stream over the network/over the internet?
2) How do I change the channel on the cable box from the media center and more importantly, from whatever computer I'm watching the stream from?

Hi, I'm not really sure what you are trying to achieve.

So, I will throw some suggestions at you so you can look into them.

Do you have a network connection on the TV?
Is the TV DNLA compliant?

Do you want to stream TV signals from the internet to the TV?

Or do you just want Media, ie Movies & Music to play on the TV?

I know you don't want a slingbox. I don't really know anything about them.

A Network Media player like a Western Digital can send media from the pc to the TV. But I suppose thats similar to a slingbox.

Have you considered a Media Server on your PC?

That is free.

Wild Media Server

Is not free, but I think you can get Youtube, & Hulu if you are in America. Over the network to the TV.

A thank you would be nice, if I have helped.

I want to use my htpc to stream my cable over the internet so I can watch it elsewhere. I think VLC can do this. I also want a way to change the channels on the cablebox. I think an IR blaster is what I'm looking for.

I'm curious about the whole cablebox thing. I have cablevision and they make it so that you need a cablebox to watch tv. Is the cablebox just a descrambler? If I had a tv tuner in my pc would I still need a cablebox? Is there something I can use so that I don't need a cablebox?
