Clicking sound "might" be the hard drive and suggests it's failed or failing.

Get a Linux boot disk and boot the system with that. Once it's booted through to windows style desktop, see if you can locate and view the installed hard drive. A Linux disk loads Linux into RAM only and installed hard drive is merely a resource for Linux. Booting with Lnux disk is a simple way to check the system hardware (RAM included).

There are various flavours of Linux about. Ubuntu.com is one source. Download an ISO and burn to a dvd. Boot with that dvd.

There is also Puppy Linux and (I think it's called) Mint Lnux - or something like.

There several Linux gurus here who can/will advise more fully on Linux flavours to use.

If the hard drive is not accessible via Linux then likely it hath failed. However there may be a way to revive it briefly to recover prrsonal data at least. So post back results of your progress as above; and then a brief resurrction guide can be proffered if needs-be?

Sounds like your hard drive may have failed. How old is the laptop?

It does sound like the hard drive is gone. Use one of the above tests to access the hard drive or run Seatools from Seagate (bootable) and see if it finds the hard drive and run the short drive test if it does.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
