How do I open up this remote control?

Specs: several
The power button on the remote control for an ancient
Panasonic TV no longer works. I have been able to program
a replacement remote to control the volume, but not power.
So I want to open up the original remote to see if I can do
anything to the power button to get it to work again. But
after taking out the three screws on the back (top corners
and bottom center), it will only pry apart slightly. The top
end pries apart about halfway down, and the bottom end
pries apart less than a quarter of the way up. The front will
not separate from the back with a reasonable amount of
force.

Must I use unreasonable force, or is there some way to
finesse it apart that I'm not seeing?

Unreasonable force did it.

Just like with my IBM keyboard a couple of decades ago.
The keyboard was actually harder to get apart, but it didn't
crack. It sure SOUNDED like it was cracking. The remote
did crack, but only a quarter inch, nowhere near all the way
across the piece. I still had to do a lot more prying to get it
apart, but the crack didn't lengthen. The crack didn't help
make it easier to get apart.

There were four tiny plastic tabs, two on each side, in the
locations suggested by where the halves were refusing to
pry apart. There was no way to tell where to press to release
them, and it isn't obvious that there is any such place, so
finesse really wasn't an option. Brute force was it.

There will likely be a couple or three mini clips as well as the obvious screws. Often plastic covers/cases etc. are held together by little tongue projections which click into place behind a wee small raised edge, or an actual slot. With a decent magnifying lens, reasonable light and a fine. thin blade of sorts, you may be able to discover where these (if exist here) are situated and prise/push the clips free of the restraints?

The risk is that you shatter or break the case and/or cover so much that it will not be practical or possible to reassemble - even with the help of suitable tape etc. to hold it all together.

Is there not a more current "universal" controller around which can be programmed to replace the original Panasonic? Also is there any chance there is a direct replacement via say eBay?

The tabs are arranged in such a way that it appears to be
impossible to finesse the case open. The front half of the
case has the tabs. The tabs are inboard from the edges on
the back half of the case that they latch onto, which means
that in order to release them, they have to be pushed inward.
But the front half of the case is heavier (thicker) plastic than
the back half. So it can't flex. It can't push inward. So there
is nothing to do but use brute force.

I'm not sure how the buttons work. There is a tiny black dot
under each button. Maybe they are conductive, so pressing
them down against the circuit board closes the circuit. But
that isn't what the traces on the board suggest. Maybe it has
something to do with capacitance, so that when the black dot
thingie is pressed against the circuit, current is able to flow
through the trace. Or maybe the actual switch is in the board,
and the black dot is just an extension of the rubber button,
pressing more precisely on the location of the switch. If that
is how it works, I should be able to test it by putting batteries
back in and pressing on the trace with a nonconductive poker.

That didn't work.

But pressing with a conductive nailhead does. So my first
guess may have been correct: The black dots may work by
being conductive. And it works on the nonworking buttons,
including the power button.

So my hope now is that cleaning the board and the black
dots will improve the electrical contacts.

Swab the underside of the button & the contact surface on the circuit board with a Q-tip dipped in alcohol. That usually does the trick. There's plenty of sites or youtube videos that explain how it's done. There are also cleaning kits available. The remote can be tested with a cellphone camera or an AM radio. A little Googling goes a long way.
