Are they the original KB/mouse? Wired USB devices need the BIOS set to support Legacy USB devices. You may need to use a PS/2 Keyboard to enter the BIOS screens.

No, they are replacements. There is no ps2 input. I would have to get a card.

Is it possible to remove the battery and then restart the system and use the dell cds to reset the bios to allow it to work with the current usb devices?

The original keyboard was designed to work in the BIOS. Reconnect it in order to enter the BIOS screens. I don't think resetting the CMOS to defaults will help.

If the units are wireless they aren't likely to ever work in the pre-Windows screens.

Did you know that typing in all caps is considered shouting, and therefore rude?

Thank you for the response. The original keyboard went into intensive care as a result of a head on collision and unfortunately passed away.

I have tried several other USB keyboards (none were wireless), including ones from other Dell units with no luck.

Yes I did know that caps = rude and I apologize - I did not catch it on my first entry.

Dell has been shipping computers without PS/2 ports for some time. The USB keyboards they supply are somehow different and will work in the POST/BIOS screens. Others require a setting in the BIOS to enable legacy USB devices before they will work. It is a catch 22 situation. Maybe you can borrow a Dell USB keyboard so you can enter the BIOS and change that setting. For some reason the default is "not enabled".

FYI you can edit any of your posts/ responses. Look above the first post .

Thanks I'll try some other Dell Keyboards and see what happens.

Tried to edit first message but the edit message icon is not on the first message (it is on the other messages)

Hope my apology is recognized and accepted.
