Solved How do i formate with out loosing data on a USB drive

Specs: Windows 7
I have a usb disk that have data on it, when i place it in my computer, it prompts me to formate, but i could loose my data. What can i do.

Do not format yet, try to recover the data first. There are various programs available.

Note that Flash Drives are not a reliable way to save data. In this instance, if you manage to get your data off then format the drive it will probably work again but as it has already given trouble it should be discarded.

EDIT:
Try it on another computer. There is just a chance it might work enough to get the data off.

echoing Derek re' flash drives. They can and do fail at any time. Anything important is best stored on dvd at least, (even better 2 sets of dvd) and if possible on an external hard drive too.

usb/flash drives are meant for temporary use, and porting files about - knowing there are secure copies/duplicates elsewhere; not for serious and unique/permanent or long term secure storage
