Solved How do I format a new usb-connected drive on a Win 8 machine

Specs: Windows 7
New USB connected drive does not show in This PC. I initialized it with Disk Management, but cannot figure out how to format it NTFS. I will be putting in a laptop when I finish.

I figured it out. Thanks for the opportunity to plug-in to vastly more experience than I have.

You format it in Disk Management, but you need to create a partition on the drive first before you can format.

Right-click the unallocated space and choose "Create new simple volume".
When that's done, right-click the volume and choose "Format".

Sarcastic comment I suppose?

Why not just put it in te laptop and do all the set up and formatting there. A whole lot simpler and faster than messing about with USB.

By initializing with disk Management I take it you created a partition. when you did that you should have got the option for format the volume. If not, right click on the disk in Disk Management and there will be a formatting option.

That was not intended to be a sarcastic comment at all; I meant it. In this case I had stumbled on the exact response piddling with various keys/button, but you people represent a vastly greater pool of resources than I could ever amass. So, no, it was not sarcastic. I deeply appreciate it when help/resources are needed that there is a "place to go."
Have a great day,

I could not do that because that laptop is being physically repaired at the time. But thanks for the answer.
