How do I fix my portable hard drive?

Verbatim / 500gb store'n'go usb 2.0

Specs: Windows Vista
When I connect my brand new portable hard drive to my Vista labtop it causes my explorer to crash. If I try the same on a Windows 7 computer I am asked to format the drive to continue. I do not want to loose my 300Gb of data. Any ideas on how to fix this?

"When I connect my brand new", "I do not want to loose my 300Gb of data."

Brand new but has 300gb of data.

What is the make and model of the drive?

If, in fact you do have data on the external then go to Windows Disk Management and post all the information listed when you highlight that drive.

BTW, the most common reason for data loss/corruption with external USB drives is improper removal. You should always use the "safely remove" icon located in the tray by the clock. If hidden, change tray settings to show all icons.
