How do I disable default com port 5? on old IBM laptop

Specs: Windows 98
How do I disable default com port 5 on an old IBM laptop I use to troubleshoot servo drives. I need com port 1 or com port 2 to communicate with servo drive. Every time I boot-up laptop defaults to infra-red port com 5 I think!!

Can you turn infared off in BIOS/Setup?

Or, do you use infared for something?

As I recall, if you have two physical com ports the first is com 1 and the second can be either com 2 or an IR port. So at least com 1 should be there unless it's disabled. As already mentioned, check your bios settings.

Hi,

As the os is W98, I would have thought Terry should look in config.sys and autoexec.bat to see if anything in either or both these files relate to COM5.
