How do I copy files from one notebook to another

January 30, 2012 at 08:42:21
Specs: Windows 7
I need to copy files from the hard drive on a notebook that will no longer power on to a new notebook. The battery on the old computer is discharged and the computer will not work with the adapter. The adapter is fine, the power problem is in the old notebook. The new computer is Windows 7 and the old computer is Vista. I mainly want to copy files but have a couple of programs to copy as well.

The only way is to temporary install the hard drive from the old computer into the new one. If you cannot install the drive in the new computer a USB enclosure should do it.

You will be able to copy data files, videos, wp documents, sound files etc. The operating system is largely irrelevant.

What you wont be able to copy and expect them to work is the programme files unless they are very simple programmes. They will need to be reinstalled on the new computer.

Get an adapter like the one in the link below. More versatile than an enclosure because it will work on any IDE or SATA 2.5", 3.5" or 5.25" drive.

You still need to remove the dead laptop hard drive.
