It sounds right to me but I've no idea why it was different in the past.

Are you taking about the preview/picture icon or are the pictures not opening with the correct program.
If the preview icon issue, look for the view option at the top right of the window and choose the correct option.
If the pictures are opening with the wrong program, right click on the file and choose the right program to open it with and/or use the default program selector option. I use Windows Picture Viewer to open most pictures.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Hi Fingers,
Thanks for your response which I tried to follow. I really had a tough time going back to
what I wanted - an actual picture instead of the photo icon. I might just have the wrong
program to open my pictures.
I will re install the entire Win 8 and see if it helps. It will be a long process but I might
just get some experience how to re install. I am also considering Restore Option to another earlier date.

So in the past you clicked on the icon representing the picture file and the picture opened up. What exactly happens now when you click on it?

A fresh installation or a 'factory' restore will remove all your documents and pictures and revert the system back to the way it was when windows was originally installed. So be careful.

System restore from within windows only moves things back to the date you chose so it's must safer to use. But system restore won't bring back software you've removed, if that's what you've done.

DAVEINCAPS, I clicked the Windows Picture Viewer app when it appeared and the picture icon changed from the previous photo icon to the a new icon. Nothing has changed. When I click the picture file, I get the Picture icon and it only changes to the real picture when I click
it again.

I have not really gotten what I want to happen. I want to get a real picture when I open the picture file instead of an Icon. I guess I still need some help.

If you go to your "Pictures" folder do the pictures work normally from there? Bear in mind that what you are using is only a "viewer" (not the actual pictures files) so the fault might lie with that.

Hi Derek,
Lets say my folder is "Phila Pics" in my flash drive. When I click that file, my screen shows the picture icon by my app Photos. Then, when I click that photo icon, I get the actual picture. It takes two clicks before I see the actual picture. What happened in the past is that when I click my Phila pics file in my flash drive, I would see the pictures on the screen immediately without seeing the photo icon and not clicking that icon anymore to see my actual picture.

Wonder if I explained it completely? Thanks though.

Oh, I didn't realise you were talking about a flash drive.

If you plug the flash drive in then find it in your drives what do you see then? Is there a folder and if so what is inside it?

In my flash drive as in my hard drive, I have a file for pictures and when I click that
file I expect to see on the screen my pictures. Instead, I see the photo icons of the
pictures I have on that file. I would like to see the pictures right away instead of the
photo icon on the screen which I have to click again to get my actual pictures.

Maybe I still don't get it - that sounds like normal to me (maybe a screen shot would help).

Without using Apps, on my Windows 8.1 if I go to the "Pictures folder" from the desktop I see both folders that contain picture files and also some loose picture files (not put in folders). My folder icons show a representation of pictures files inside it. If I open a folder there are icons for all the pictures that are within it, which I can click open and slideshow if necessary.

Is yours different to this or is it all about your apps on the touch screen?

thanks for your time. when I click my file for pictures I get a screen full of the photo
picture icons. And, when I click that icon individually again, I get the real picture. I guess that's what the process is instead of getting the real picture immediately without
getting the app photo icon first.
