how did the folders on my external disappear?

Specs: Windows XP
Recently my main computer got a virus. I had an external hard drive with my boyfriends files on it. I put what i could fit (of my pictures music etc) into the remaining space on the hard drive. At this point everything was fine on the External hard drive. So I reformatted and completely wiped my main computer. I reinstalled windows and downloaded avg. I scanned the external hardrive for viruses and then moved on. Everything was still in its proper place then. I safely turned the External hard drive off and proceeded downloading drivers and all kinds of stuff for my freshly reformatted computer. A few days ago I turned on the External hard drive and all of MY folders were still there, but all of my boyfriends were gone. I downloaded a data recovery program and it says alot of files are overwritten. Is it possible to recover them? how? We are really really upset by this since it had ALL of his documents anf folders from his old computer. Pictures, important work documents, music movies, etc. PLEASE PLEASE HELP.

If you did not write anything to the external drive in the interim than it is not likely your boyfriend's files were overwritten.

That being the case there are only two possibilities. First, they were never there or second, they are still there.

Did you actually verify ALL the files WERE there after copying them to the external?

What program is indicating the files were overwritten?

When viewing the external drive in Disk Management, is the total capacity shown there the same as expected?

Did you have more than one partition on the external drive?

Is there unallocated space on the external drive?

Hi, I actually have the same problem as hers. Although mine is that all my folders how up but the files on my external drive occasionally appear and disappear. Whenever they appear, I try to copy them, hoping that I can save them. Unfortunately, it won't let me copy. I did the same thing as she did, I tried with recovery programs but they didn't work. I tried the disk check but that didn't work either. Via properties, I checked my external drive's capacity and it seems everything still in there. I do not have other partitions in my external drive. I still have space in my eternal drive. I really hope you can help me. Thanks!

You really need to start your own thread here at CN.

Use the scan tool here to post the specs of your rig. The scan tool is perfectly safe.
