A friend of mine gave me a laptop

First, who ever gave it to you is not your friend if they are giving you stolen property.

then i'm stuck tell then who gave to me

No, you simply say you found it on a park bench.

i thought id throw it away

Why throw it away when there is the possibility that it could be returned to the rightful owner,
who I'm sure would be very happy to get it back.

Then there is always the chance it has not been reported stolen,
you have now done your "due diligence" and can feel, at least partially,
satisfied that you did the right thing.

What make is it?

If you boot it up and find data from some else on it... then thats one possible indication that it's been stolen.

Equally ask your friend for proof purchase of the laptop?

I take it you don't trust your friend? A "fairly new" laptop would have Windows 8/8.1 or 10 unless it was wiped & replaced with an older OS. You have Vista listed in your specs (YIKES!). Did you check the users folder to see how many user accounts there are? Did you do as trvlr suggested & see if someone's data is already present in one of those user accounts? If you don't have access due to password protection, the laptop was definitely configured for someone else, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's stolen. You can easily remove the password(s) & then access the other user account(s) to see what files are present.

Copy the Serial Number off the computer,
walk down to the Police Station and
ask if they would check to see if it has been reported stolen.

Excellent resolution from Mike.

Double gold stars - and a new halo too.

Presuming the laptop is returned to whomever (if it was indeed stolen) David also comes up trumps. As for the "friend..." better to lose him/her and find others?
