Specs: Windows 7
double clicking on an icon on my desktop will not open the program or file. It simply flashes for 2 seconds and then goes away as if I never double clicked. Going to the drop down in the specific file and clicking on open does not open the file/program either. Itwill show the revolving circle that it is working and then just quits

If you're using the touchpad to double click with, try using a corded USB mouse.
If the corded USB mouse works fine, you probably have a hardware problem with the touchpad, not a software problem.

If you're using a corded USB mouse or a wireless mouse to double click with, try the touchpad or a different mouse.
