How can I fix my CD Rom?

November 20, 2010 at 19:35:41
Specs: Windows XP, pent III
I have an LG gcc-4480b combo drive. Sometimes it will read the discs that I put in. Sometimes it won't. I have a cd that I need to read to install a program. I cannot find that program online, so I need the disc. And sometimes, it will read the disc, but then when I start the setup program, it hangs and then goes non-responsive.

Help!

OMG don't judge me!

A firmware update may help, but given the low price of DVD writers, why not just spring for a new drive?

Just because they are cheap doesn't mean I have the money to replace it. Which is why my desktop is 10 years old and my laptop is older. I just do not have the money.

I found the firmware update, but I am scared that it will ruin the drive altogether, then I will be out of luck

I just bought a Samsung DVD burner from newegg for $15, free shipping & no tax. They sold out quickly but here's an LG for $18:

Maybe the install will run off the harddrive. Hopefully you can copy the CD.

Have you tried simply cleaning the drive?

Cleaning sets can be found at cheapo stores for £1 here in the UK.

Good Luck - Keep us posted.

I do not have $18 for a new drive! I have to deal with what I have. I cannot copy off the disk to the hard drive to try that. I have tried cleaning it too, to no avail.

Oh well, Maybe I can find the program somewhere online.

I never really thought of that...I could do it. I wouldn't have internet, but I suppose that I wouldn't need it. Thanks!
