Solved how can I enter BIOS in an ASUS model X551MA?

January 10, 2015 at 17:35:16
Specs: Windows 8
I have tried to install an other OPSYS in my laptop, but first I need to enter BIOS on this model, it refuses so far. Next I have to allow boot to go straight to my DVD or USB key

YOU must disable fast boot in WIN8 not the bios (boot into WIN8). as per the links I posted.

It should be on your startup screen, use the pause button to read down the bottom of the screen.
Hit the space bar to restart.

You may have to use the FN key as well to get into the bios.

No start-up choice at boot.... goes directly to WINDOWS 8 startup screen....tried F12 to go straight to my USB with OPSYS, no go, tried F10, F8, F4 etc, and space bar, still no entry to BIOS.

You have to turn off fast boot with in Win8. Before F2 or F1 will work.

Hi TopFarmer, that is what I am trying to DO, change settings - incl. Fast Boot... F2 does not allow entry from boot (holding down F2 while switching on.) .... So far none have worked, trying F1 now...

"(holding down F2 while switching on"
Have you tried toggling?
That's clicking it repeatedly.

found F2 with fn started the BOOT BIOS... I think WIN8(latest) interferes wih attempts to remove windows partition or adding UBUNTU alongside... I'd rather delete WIN8 anyhow... How would I get drive DVD or USB to grab priority now?

Go to the boot tab & select what you want or read the manual I gave you.

This IS WEIRD, I reset all the necessary to DISABLED (fast Boot) and USB HDD in first position, etc, and NOW it defaulted BACK to previous, PLUS DISALLOWS USE OF F2 / F1 even WITH fn.... and tried it also with "toggling" ... just about to stomp on this s---!

If you can get back into the bios, you have to press F10 to save the new setting.

I decided that I think W8 is somehow interfering with BIOS and /or boot BIOS entry, and just now chose to RESET PC WINDOWS TO DEFAULT. lose all the free programs, but don't care anyhow, as I usually only run Open Office etc, and UBUNTU on other PC's except my MAC. I like the MAC, no problems. Once setup, I will try and run BIOS again.

BTW, the pc didn't even allow my CD to run with ACRONIS DISK REPAIR on it! Is that something to do with W8? being power-hungry like Taliban?

HI, "TOPFARMER" - THANKS, DONE THAT, IT WAS A LITTLE STRANGE FOR ME (I ONLY EVER WORKED WITH DOS BEFORE GOING INTO MS-WINDOWS IN 1997.. AND TO CHANGE A BIOS SETTING THIS WAY IS QUITE NOVEL TO ME). I PRESUME THAT THIS CHANGES ONLY WINDOWS BOOT AT STARTUP? - STILL THE OTHER SETTINGS WOULD HAVE TO BE CHANGED IN BIOS?

Some of this junk get confussing. There is a fast boot to change when booted in Win8 and a different on in the BIOS. I do have the same ASUS for 4 weeks and have to send it back for repairs. Linux did not correctly connect into the bios EFI settings and think messed it up. I am hopeing the new bios upgrade will fix the problem. Do not know what it takes to use cd to boot. What OS do you want to duel boot with ?

You do need to boot USB or CD in EFI boot mode not MBR boot mode. Do a web search on "defference between EFI and MBR booting" . If you are installing linux go to there forum and read. Some linuxs will not yet install in EFI and would stay away from them till they do.

I have FINALLY managed to get this ASUS X551MA to take up UBUNTU 14.04.1, and I found that I had to insert DISK first, but forgot I had a USB drive in before I put the DVD in... ANYHOW, I started up with F2 to check BIOS again, and suddenly found I had 5 DRIVES! , - The HDD I recognised, and the DVDRAM with UEFI i guessed was my UBUNTU dvd in the drive, so put it in 1st place, and also the USB with UEFI showed up as well! - I put it in 2nd place, and the HDD in 3rd. F10 saved, Restart went fine, but while DVD started first, suddenly the USB drive took over and loading as I write, I decided to ping off W8 altogether...

To all who helped... THANKS LOTS! - SUCCESS! - My new OS ( UBUNTU 14.04.1 ) works, and has rebooted a few times on it's own after updating itself!
