If you want multiple stereo speakers you can connect a stereo
amplifier to the headphone output and drive as many speakers
as desired. Depend upon the laptop you may also have 3.1 or
5.1 outputs. The are also addon USB sound adapters that can
provide 3.1, 5.1, or 7.1 outputs.

For true surround sound without a pre-processor, you need a crossover and a reverb. The crossover would filter out your low frequencies for your sub and the reverb would separate out the background sounds for your rear speakers. A good Equalizer will come with these built-in. Radio Shack use to sell headphone set equalizers but ever since they stopped being a specialized electronics store and started selling TVs I don't think they sell this stuff any more. Try Google...
