Solved Help! How do I fix this?

Specs: Windows 7
All that shows up on my laptop is the desktop photo. No icons nothing else! There was a message saying something like a program is trying to shut down, click here and I clicked. Now just a photo is looking back at me.

When did this problem happen? Were you attempting to shut down? If so, depress Cntl.+Alt.+Del>, Select to start task manager, then select Applications. Close any running applications and your computer should shut down.

Whatever application/s were running were not responding. You probably should run a malware and virus scan if you don't know what application was hung.

✔ Best Answer
Try discharging the motherboard components like this:
Turn off computer and disconnect from power. If it is a laptop remove the main battery too. Now hold the Power Off/On button down for at least 20 seconds. Re-assemble and see if it helps. This has sometimes "unstuck" computers.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

If I turn the computer off and then on again it automatically pops up my photo, not the usual start up sequence.

Yep, understood from your post.

Best try #3 though - it doesn't always help but you might be lucky.

Derek... THANK YOU. I tried your instructions with my laptop, without removing the battery, and it worked!

Good to hear but keep an eye on things just in case there is something definite that caused this in the first place. Hopefully it was just a bad shut down.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
