HDD not recognised on occasions

Specs: Windows XP PRO, 1.66 1GB
Good evening all
My name is Steve, I am having trouble with my acer 7003, of late it will not boot the hard drive and comes up saying no HDD found in addition to this when it does decide to boot every thing is perfect until it requires a reboot, ie: after an update. After an update it will go to a black screen and no further action, so far I have found that if I either leave it for a day or put a boot disk in (one I purchased on line that seems to work ok) it will then reboot I can tell if the reboot will be succesful during the boot process because the load bar at the bottom will rise virtually continuously. I am fairly new to computer maintenance but by no means a beginner although I must say this little problem seems to me to suggest the bios chip may need flashing or replacing, I am open minded due to my lack of experience in this particular area and of course do not really want to go flashing BIOS without elliminating everything else first.
Thanking you in advance of help with this matter Steve

Best check easy things first. Reseat the connections to your hard drive (best unplugged and put back in firmly). If it is a SATA drive, the power plugs/sockets are sometimes a bit weak so its worth cleaning their edge connectors with a small piece of pencil earaser.

I doubt very much a BIOS flash is necessary. These are only required under quite special circumstances, such as to suit a particular processor. If it used to work this will not be the answer and if it goes wrong your motherboard is dead.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Check in your cmos/bios setup for something like a 'hard disk pre delay'. That option gives the hard drive a little more time to spin up and be recognized. If it's there set it for about 6 seconds.
