K guys, have a good one for you......

Original HDD config was an XP Pro install on a 500GB SATAII drive with 2 partitions created with Partition Magic 8.0. Receieved the SMACK DOWN with malware, spyware and a trojan DNSCHANGER...grrrrrrr...after the usual virus removal process (regedit, safe mode process, SpySweeper scan, Norton Scan and House Call scan...yada yada yada) I was at the end of my rope with beating this dead horse, so I toss in my XP Pro cd and begin the setup. Not thinking I suppose, I deleted partition 1 then created it again then went into the install and then BAM!!!! I get hit with message promting me to format my hdd. If I lose partition 2, I'ma gonner... So now I have loaded up my Vista Ultimate drive (80GB IDE) with the hopes that I can just slave the SATA drive and pull the data from there, just as any of us would try in pre Vista OS's and on IDE HDD's. Again, BAM!!! Vista now tells me that in order to reconize my drive I must format...grrrr.... But now after a few visit's with my good friend tapsumbong I had a vision.... :o% I go out and grab a new SATA drive and master it, then i slave the original drive with the partition 1 blown away and then load XP on the new SATA drive and then try to get the data from partition 2...

So my question is: will my vision be a solution or am I still beating the dead horse? If so, can you shout out some ideas that might help me to NOT format partition 2?

I'm gathering from what you said that you deleted the partition that contained your OS, and for the sake of identification, let's call it the C drive. If you had your info you're trying to recover on the D drive , or second partition, it won't be affected by a format. It seems to me you're being asked to format the new drive you just created. If you didn't delete the second partition, it will still be there. You, naturally have to format the partition you're going to use to reinstall your OS. The machine won't recognize a hdd that's not formatted.

Keep Smiling
It makes them think you're up to something...

"regedit, safe mode process, SpySweeper scan, Norton Scan and House Call scan"

Maybe if you used decent software you wouldn't be in such a hallucinogenic state. Dump SpySweeper & replace it with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Dump Norton & replace it with AVG Free or Avast. Use a system cleaner such as CCleaner or Glary Utilities (do NOT install the toolbars). And use a trojan remover!
