HDD detected but unable to create partitions

Specs: Windows XP
I have a Samsung 80 GB IDE hard drive, when I tried to connect with the motherboard, it is showing connected in system Bios but when we insert the windows XP operating system installation disk and tried to create the partitions on it, it says unable to create partitions due to harddrive faulty and HDD also makes noise inbetween when system creating partition.

I'm guessing this is a used drive?

The fact the bios detects it doesn't guarantee that it's a good drive. But check that its data cable is in good condition and tightly connected and jumpers are correctly placed.
