Hard Drives Are Unable To Be Found

June 3, 2010 at 13:02:41
Specs: Windows Home Edition SP2, 1.8ghz Pentium 4 with 1gb of RAM.
I am having trouble finding drives on my
computer. It picks up the CD drives but not the
hard drives. So what I did to test this was I one
of the hard drives out, set the remaining one to
master and connected it with a CD drive with
the CD drive set to slave. And sure enough it
didn't pick up the CD drive. Does this mean
the IDE on my motherboard is bad?
Considering the CD drives were revealed before
I did this switch. Any help on what to do or
how to test it would be greatly appreciated.

Is this a new problem caused by a change to a drive? If it is a new drive make sure that the master/slave pins are in the correct master/slave pins on the back of the drives. Are you sure that you are connecting the ide cable to the proper mother board ide slot/s? Disconnect the ide cables from the slots, then connect the ide cable to the master hard drive and then to slot 1 on the mother board. Start the computer to see if it works. If it does not detect it, use the bios setting and select "detect" and install the drive, If it works shut he computer down. Then install the secondary hard drive to that ide cable, and start the computer to see if it works. If it works shut down and start installing the cdrom drives to slot 2 just like you did the the hard drives..HTH

Temporarily disconnect the CD drive altogether. Jumper the HDD as master (single), then connect it all by itself on the primary channel. What happenes when you boot?

Capt, I tried everything you said but it won't even detect them.
And to answer your question Jam, I disregarded all CD drives
and had one hard drive plugged in to the primary IDE plug set as
master like you said to do. It didn't detect it, which came as no
surprise.

I have now gotten one of the hard drives to be found, but it say
NTLDR is missing. What do I do to fix this. I'm pretty sure this is
a boot software error?
