Hi a friends machine has died and he wanted to get data off of it. This drive http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/... won't mount. I have it hooked up to my machine using a set of cables i bought from ebay that connect the drive via power connectors and usb. I don't know the name of it. My friend had two drives in his machine and the other drive mounted ok. I think it might be because this drive is different and maybe i need to change the jumper or something? I am unclear what the settings mean that are written on the drive so can someone tell me. When i am connecting the drive to read i am connecting it as sort of a slave i guess but is that what i should select when doing this with the usb cable? I always found that when doing this with other drives i have no jumper on the drive at all and it works. It is also a possibility when the machine died the primary drive died too??? The drive that i am having trouble with was the master in his old system.

"I have it hooked up to my machine using a set of cables i bought from ebay"

Try connecting it internally instead of using your eBay setup. Make sure you set the master/slave jumper correctly, then temporarily connect it to the 2ndary channel using a standard 80-wire ribbon cable.

I have no more cables left inside the machine. I have two hard drives in both my machines. One machine has no ide connections and the other machine gets fussy if i pull the slave out and then put back in. I can't afford to do that and waste a lot of time rectifying the problems. Anyway this cable thing works!

I got a different (better) set of cables http://www.google.com/products/cata...
and this worked much better. The other set i had i had to open the box and plug it into the psu ...this one is powered separately and it worked! Thanks thought this might be useful when someone is deciding what to buy!
