Hard Drive Space disappeared

Specs: Windows Vista, 1.90 Ghz/1 GB
I've been trying to fix this problem for some time but I cant seem to be able to fix it. The laptop I'm using right now crashes from time to time and Im thinking that the backup files has taken all the space I had left on my hard drive. I can't remember how much space I had on it exactly but I know it was around 70 gigs. Ive done almost everything but I don't know how to find the files. Just trying to get some ideas on what could be going on or where to find these files.

Can you be more specific on these 'backup files'? Are they selected files from a backup utility or just some files you've copied?

If you know the name(s) of these backup files i'd just try searching for them. Maybe a tree /F /A > allfiles.txt from the command line c drive and searching the file ctrl+f for your file names.

Someone correct me if im wrong but my understanding is that a full hard drive wouldnt necessarily keep crashing your system. I would check for other things. Make sure you have the latest updates (service pack) and drivers for your vista box and that you are running virus/malware protection.
