Hard drive replacement for old IBM ThinkPad

Specs: Windows XP, Intel Centurino Duo
My girlfriend's laptop is an old IBM ThinkPad with a bad hard drive. The hard drive is a Seagate 7200.1, ST910021AS, 100GB an FW 4.06. I am imagining that "FW" stands for "firmware," but all that I can find online are seagate harddrives with different firmwares -- 8.04, for example. Am I correct in believing that the replacement hard drive would need to be 4.06. What would happen if I tried using a Seagate 7200.1 FW 8.04?

According to the number you supplied it is a SATA Drive, therefore any SATA drive will be suitable if a similar capacity:
