Hard drive making a grinding sound.

Specs: Windows XP, 3.06GHz
My p.c. has been making a grinding sound when it first loads, then goes quiet. This has been happening for weeks. Now when I started it, it said disk reading error hit control alt & delete. It then started to load. Does this mean my hard drive is going bad? I really don't have the funds to replace it, is it fixable? Could it just be dirty inside?
Thanks in advance.

Go to your hard drive manufacturers website and download and run their diagnostic utility.
That will run a non destructive diagnostic test and give you some indication as to the health of your hard drive.

NOTE: Do NOT select the destructive options if you want to keep the data on it. Just run the diagnostics.

When everything else fails, read the instructions.

If you are getting these error messages it is highly likely the drive is failing. You should backup important data ASAP as you may not have much time. Do this before running the drive diagnostic. If the drive is failing it must be replaced.
