Hard drive letter change

Specs: Windows Vista
A pal gave me a virtually new formated 2.5" large capacity SATA HD. I want to use this in my laptop to replace the failed drive SATA. When I fitted it it showed on my machine as 'F' drive and I want it to be my'C' drive. How can I correct this'

How do you know the drive letter assignment? The "failed HDD" should be removed. The "virtually new" HDD should be the only HDD installed. Boot off your Windows disk, partition & format the drive, then proceed with the Windows installation.

Was the drive previously used in the same model laptop as yours? I'm wondering because it sounds like you may have it already connected as the main drive. Post back info on how you have it hooked up now.
