Specs: Windows XP Home, 2.793 GHz / 2 GB
Windows would not bootup, and i get the dreaded BSOD page. I used a hiren boot Disk to check status of the Hard Drive. And it tells me the Hard Drive Firmware is Corrupted and SMART warning shows too.

I would like to know does this mean the HD is cactus? Data is all lost?

I've never heard of that happening before but if you had bothered to list the make/model of your drive, I could have pointed you to the firmware download site. I'll take a shot - here's the Seagate site:

The best utility to test your hard drive is the one that the hard drive manufacturer offers for free on their website. I recommend that first. That of course is also where you will find the proper firmware update as mentioned above depending on the brand.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Both the hard drive and any associated parts can cause this issue. Generally the drive alone is the cause but as Fingers suggests, you need the OEM diags for the best results.
Run also memtest for a few days. See bios to correct voltages to if they show.

the problem is worse now, half way thru doing a an extended disk scan with WD data lifeguard tools the drive starts ticking. It's not recognized in bios anymore.

I think i have lost all my files
