What method are you using to access the hard drive?

You MAY be formatting using FAT32 file system. WinXP can't format a partition larger than 32GB using FAT32 file system. This is by design.

After rereading your original post I wonder if you have set a jumper on the hard drive to limit the hard drive to 32GB. Some drives had such a jumper. Other than that if you are using WinXP to format then you need to look in Disk Management to see if the rest of the 80GB drive shows there. If it does then you need to delete and partitions and then make one partition using all available space. Then simply format it using NTFS. You will get that choice.
