Specs: Windows XP, Intel Celeron 2GHz/ 256MB
I am fixing a Dell Dimension 2350, with Windows XP Home Edition, not sure what service pack. The problem I am having is when I try to boot the computer it recognizes the hard drive on the boot menu, and in bios, but I get a "Hard Disk Failure" error message. The hard drive shows up in BIOS, and when I attempt to reinstall windows, it gets as far as 26% when it starts giving "Unable to copy file to hard disk" error messages. And then it will not do anything past that. The hard drive is a MAXTOR DiamondMax Plus 8, with 30GB of memory, it is the original hard drive that came with the motherboard. I am not sure what happened with the computer before the problem started happening, and I cannot get into safe mode, or recovery mode, to try and fix it from within windows. Please help me.

"Hard Disk Failure" is pretty self explanatory - replace the HDD. And while you're at it, increase the RAM amount to 1GB.

I have tried using different hard drives but got the same error. I am wondering if maybe it is the motherboard?

Maybe a bad IDE cable?

I have changed IDE cables as well, and used brand new ones, i have also tried putting the hard drive in another computer and got the same problem. I suppose the hard drive really has failed and will need to purchase a new one. Thank you for your help.
