hard drive detected, but shows 0 out of 500mb

Specs: Windows Vista
I recently moved all my files from lap top to external drive, to have the lap top reinstalled. external drive was fine, but few days later when i tried to access it it was saying there is nothing on it, where there were 500 GB of data. On my bro's lap top it was saying to formate it straight after connecting it to his lap top. Somebody did try to recover the files, but got only 10 GB back. Another person had a look, but said the action of the first one might have completely destroyed all my data, which really did not please me. So I need an advise on what program to use to try and recover as much, as possible?
would be very grateful for any suggestions.

If you know Linux or Unix commands, boot with a Live CD, mount the drive & look for your files.

Try 'testdisk' -read the How-TO use first. You want the 'recover boot record' function. Do a web search for program.

If test disk doesn't work try recuva. Get both at the links below.
