GPU failure?

Hello all - Thanks in advance for your replies.
I'm running an 8800gtx and I've been receiving the "Display Driver has failed and Recovered" message for quite some time. There is no apparent trigger and the behavior was sporadic. Yesterday I got the BSOD and tried to reboot. Initially, I was able to boot into safe mode, scan for viruses and all appeared fine. I performed a normal shutdown and attempted to reboot normally.

The first few attempts at reboot, the monitor never received a signal, but the hd was spinning and i could hear the welcome screen come up with vista. I managed to navigate to the shut down button in the lower right corner "blindly" and shut down. This happened 2 or three times, and now i cannot get to welcome screen sounds to come up.

I pulled the HD thinking that there may be a driver issue, ran check disk on another pc and it found problems that it could not fix. I tried to boot from the suspect hard drive and I got the BSOD after trying to start in safe mode with the stop 0x0000007B code. I am able to access everything from my HD, on a slaved computer. I've never had a problem with temps, and dont suspect the psu. Any ideas?

P.S. please forgive me for I am not very tech savvy!

Why would you pull the hard drive to correct a driver problem? Simply uninstall the current nVidia driver (Control Panel > Add or Remove), then install the latest available driver:

Well it was a GPU failure. Replaced and everything is fine.

The reason for pulling the hard drive was b/c there was nothing but black on the screen. Couldn't remove drivers due to that fact. Cheers!
