Most likely a hardware problem with the laptop screen. Does anything change moving the lid??
Running WinXP sounds like the laptop has it years.

An interesting thought, thank you. But I think it is a bios set-up issue. I put the question to the forum in the hope that somebody had a snap solution ! But I'll have to dig into the bios to resolve it ... I'll send you my apologies now, in case I fail !!

Sounds like part of the LCD screen is depowered, and it can't block the backlight. That would indicate a hardware issue, especially if the bars are always present and an external monitor doesn't show the same images. If it were software/firmware, then I would expect black bars instead of white. You would also see a change when a different driver took over; you would get bars when the BIOS is doing its thing or when running Windows, not both.

It could also be the display data cable, but it's still most likely hardware.

Please let us know the outcome. I also think it's the screen but am happy to be proved wrong.....

Moving the lid: Best slowly open and nearly close it watching it all the time for any change. They go wrong at the hinges.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
