Some details of the other hardware involved might be helpful.
particularly the powersupply. What make/model & specs is it?

What motherboard & CPU? How much ram?

There may be a number of factors at work here and the more information you provide the better chance someone will be able to identify the root of the problem.

"particularly the powersupply. What make/model & specs is it?"

What total wattage rating? What amp rating on each voltage rail?

It is on a label on the side of the powersupply. You may need to remove it from the case to see.

8400gs is low end card and it need very little power to run. Download new driver from nvidia website then uninstall the current driver and restart the system.

My nvidia 8400m gt went out on my sony vgc-l515e computer. I went to sony.com and then to my computer model and found that this card is being replaced at no charge by sony. They list the computer models that this replacement applies to.
I love SONY
