Gateway MX7118 laptop bypasses power switch

January 19, 2011 at 23:37:57
Specs: Gateway MX7118, 787MHz/448MB
Why in the my MX7118 powering up when the power button and ribbon cable are disconnected?? Bench testing, trying to narrow down problem, and I am stumped!!! I can only say the power is going straight to the mobo..(somehow) and the screen just flicks once and nothing happens. I originally had the problem of it not wanting to power up (post-What is My Problem-Drust7) it would only light up the power indicator lights "blue" for a few seconds and then shut down. I pulled bios battery for 24 hrs, put it back in and now this thing is getting power if I put in battery (or) plug in ac adapter. Won't read any discs...nothing. I have a new mobo but am afraid to install it an ruin it also. I would be really happy if someone knows what is going on with this situation....Thank You

"I pulled bios battery for 24 hrs"

It only has to be removed for a few seconds. Like I said in my responses in your othe thread, the machine is outdated & you're out of your league. Take it to someone who knows what they're doing.

The reason for leaving the battery out for that long is some motherboard designs have a capacitor inline to the BIOS chip that will still supply power to the chip after the battery is removed, the wait time is to let this cap discharge. I am just trying to learn how to work on laptops. I have worked with microprocessors and understand quite a bit. I really don't need "advice" that is offensive & insulting. I know I am "out of my leauge", but I am puting in effort to learn. I am asking for advice from someone who knows something about the MX7118 and / or has seen this problem before. If your cars fuel pump went out and you could fix it yourself and save $200 would you go ahead and pay someone else $300 to fix it?? Or maybe money is no object to you
