Free? No. you would still need to buy some hardware to make the connection.

I recomend an enclosure or housing. Normally these come with the connections needed and the housing protects the drive somewhat. You can get just an adapter to connect the drive to a usb port but for the cost just a few bucks more you can get the enclosure. I don't know the size of the drive, 2.5 inch, 3.5 inch etc. etc. or the connection needed sata. sata 2, ide, etc. etc.. Check newegg.com you should be able to find one there for less than $20.

If the laptop hard drive will be used as a permanent external drive then get the enclosure. All laptops use 2.5" hard drives. It could be IDE or SATA type, you need to know which before buying an enclosure.

If you want something more versatile then get the adapter linked below.

Look at the link below to determine which type of laptop hard drive you have.

Thanks OtheHill. I did not know that all laptops used a 2.5 inch hdd. I am afraid I don't work with them much. I actually have the adapter you recomend above. The first one I got was DOA but newegg made it good in just a few days. I can't count how many times I have used it since.
