Solved FPS drop in all games!

May 24, 2013 at 18:15:24
Specs: Windows 7
Hi, I am a regular "heavy" gamer. And I play games like Battlefield, Call of Duty, Counter-Strike and Grand Theft Auto. I have recently been getting FPS drops in all these games. Battlefield 3 though stays at 40FPS average. The other games suffer, especially Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

After reading one particular guy's post about trying ThrottleStop, I decided to try it. It did somewhat solve issues with Counter-Strike: Source and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, but not CS:GO. (ThrottleStop does not cause me overheating problems as some people may claim). Also, I have all the latest drivers (stable versions, not beta) updated for ALL the softwares even the OS.

If you have any other complete solutions, please help as it would also help many millions of other gamers with similar problems!

My system(laptop) specs are:
Model: MSI GE620
CPU: Intel Core i7-2630QM
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GT540M
RAM: 4GBx2 DDR3
HDD: 500GB @ 7200RPM
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (Genuine)

If required, I will add other information when asked to.

Thanks in advance,
t0rch

Thanks for your help. I tried your suggestion. Here are my results-
- Malwarebytes showed no infection.
- Used Avast which did not significantly affected anything.
- No change though!

But I got stable 80+FPS, i.e. my problem is solved!

What I did was instead of 16x as recommended by the person who found the supposed fix, I set the Multiplier in ThrottleStop to 20x and minimised it. The game or all the games work flawlessly now!

I do appreciate and thank you for your time and help.

Have you:
Cleaned out your browser's History, Cookies, Temp Internet, etc.
Uninstalled unused programs.
Do a Disk Clean Up.
Use msconfig (Start Tab) to remove programs from starting with Windows.
Run Malwarebytes.
Repeat about monthly.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

I regularly use CCleaner, and have only necessary programs installed like VLC, Steam, Origin, WinRAR, etc. Also I have Norton 360 which I use regularly for Disk Clean-up and optimisation.

But thanks for your help! :D

Try an experiment.
Scan with Malwarebytes to be sure there is no lurking infection. Then disconnect from the internet, disable Norton, and try a game. If like I suspect, the game performs significantly better, dump Norton and replace it with something that will not drag your system down. There are free antivirus programs that will perform better without loading your system down like Norton or McAfee have always done. Avast free version comes to mind first, MS Security Essentials is recommended by many, but my personal favorite is Webroot Secure Anywhere (not free though).

Glad to hear you got it solved.
Not sure how you tried Avast without uninstalling Norton, but it does not appear to matter to you now though. Just make sure that you only have one antivirus program installed at any one time (Malwarebytes is and exception since it does not continuously monitor, but only scans when you tell it to and it is designed to work with your antivirus program as a back up/auxiliary scanner).
