formatting new hard drives

Specs: Macintosh OSX 10.4
I just bought a new WD hard drive for an old existing external HD and as per usual went to format this new 500GB drive. In Disc Utilities is was only listed as 128GB! I've contacted the supplier and they were talking Window language - need XP with 'service pack 2 or 3 to access the full 500GB. Could anyone advise as to why OS X 10.4 only see this new drive as a 128GB and if or what I need to do on Mac to access all 500GB

Actually you only need windows XP SP1 and you also need a compatible BIOS. To do the same on the Mac you will also need software and hardware that can read large sisz disks.

This will explain:

This only applies to the PC, not a MAC, but the same principle applies.

In the Windows world we have the option of adding a PCI HD controller card that has 48 bit LBA capability. There might be cards for your box.
