Formattijng Hard Drive

Specs: Windows Vista home basic
I bought a laptop with win vista basics already installed. It ran very well untill a freind put win7 on it, which worked fine. However he had used an illegal copy, so i told him to to take it off and revert back to win vista basic.
Problem now being, that things are not working properly any more. so i thought i would just try to format my hard drive and start over new, using the microsoft disk that came with the laptop. It will allow me to reboot, but nothing else at all. No other options what so ever.
Can anyone tell me if i have any other options open to me, to format my hard drive and start over?
I would be gratefull for any help, since i am not too great with computers and dont have the funds to buy some of the programs that people suggest, which could wipe my hard drive. Thank you everyone!

We may have to read the owners manual. Some cd/dvd's that are used to recover systems can not be booted normally. You may have to press a F key at boot time.

Thank you for your reply!
I have the manual and the cd and have done as the manual says, also not forgetting to change the bios setup, to boot from disk first. The only option that i get from the cd, is to reboot! Yet in the manual it does show the option for certain other utilities, but i cannot get to that, no matter how i follow the instructions, all i get is the reboot. which doesnt do much to help my situation.
Are there any other ways i could access my hard drive, in order to formatt it?
Thanks very much, Sheels.

Hello friend.
I was also facing the same problem like you. Don't get worried. Try to format your operating system and install the vista which you had installed first. Hope you will be able to work well with your laptop .

Thanks

Before formatting the hard drive backup your personal files. They will be gone after a format.

Most factory restore options will also result in personal data being lost, so back them up.

I guess it is possible that to use the disk you would have had to press any key just after the booting to start the install.

As jefro stated you probably need to hit any key to boot to CD when that message appears on the screen. You need to pay attention or it will go right by.
