KILLDISK does the job as well as any other product - it's free and comes as a bootable floppy disk or CD.

Keep in mind that if you use killdisk it will wipe the entire hard drive. If you have a restore partition it will also be wiped.

Donating a used computer only works for the recipient when there is a working operating system included.

So, if you have restore disks then wipe the drive with killdisk then restore to factory state. That should be good enough for your purposes.

In case you are not familiar with killdisk it does a pretty good job of wiping data off a har drive. Google for killdisk and check it out.

FLSue intended to use killdisk and then apply recovery disks to the drive.
